USS Monitor Patriotic Cover, 1865.

This is a Union cover depicting the US Steam Battery Monitor (Ironclad : 1862). The ship is shown broadside in the configuration it had during the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862. This design is very similar to number 614 in The George Walcott Collection of Used Civil War Patriotic Covers. It is a brown design. The envelope was sent to Vernon Depot, CT from Washington DC and bears a 3-cent stamp from 1865.
